Flu is a common illness that is spread by coughs and sneezes.

For some people, including older and vulnerable people, it can be very serious and can lead to health complications including bronchitis, pneumonia and even death.

If you care for someone who is vulnerable, elderly or disabled, who wouldn't be able to get by without your help, then catching flu can be catastrophic.

That’s why unpaid carers can get a free NHS flu jab. In order to be eligible you’ll need to receive Carer's Allowance or be the main carer of an older or disabled person whose welfare would be at risk if you became ill.

Once you’ve been vaccinated against the flu, you're less likely to pass the virus onto the person you care for, who could become seriously ill as a result.

How to get a flu jab

You can get your free flu vaccination at your local GP practice or pharmacy. Just get in touch and they'll be able to book you in or explain the system in your area.

The best time to have a flu vaccine is the autumn, from the beginning of October to early November. Don't worry if you've missed it - you can have the vaccine later in winter, even in January or February. Pharmacists have seen an increase in people getting Flu Jabs in the last couple of weeks.

Who else can get a free flu jab?

Other categories of people are also eligible for a free flu jab, including those aged 65+, those who are pregnant, and people with certain health conditions including respiratory diseases, heart disease, diabetes and a weakened immune system.
